Get the Look: Carice von Houten at the Valkyrie Premiere

Makeup artist Brett Freeman created this gorge look for Dutch breakout star Carice von Houton. Carice and her stylist Jessica Pastor chose a beautiful blush-hued dress by Donna Karan.

Says Brett, "We all fell in love with the gorgeous draping and subtle color against her pale skin, but I needed to bring out the drama to make the look 'stun' on the red carpet. Smoky eyes were too severe, so we stuck with a clean, shimmery lid and dramatic eyeliner. Carice’s skin is dazzling in person, so we kept the rest of her face quite simple, just adding a touch of blush and giving her shoulders a light misting of shimmer to warm up the rest of her skin."

Brett (pictured with Carice, left) used the following products. It's a recessionista mix of high and low:
Base: LORAC Natural Performance Foundation NP1, Oil Free
Face powder: magic by Prescriptives liquid powder
Concealer: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer and Highlight in ‘Light’
Cheeks and eyes: MAC Powder Blush in Springsheen
Brow: Vanitymark Ultra-Brow Powder in Milk Choco
Eyeliner: Rimmel SpecialEyes Eye Liner Pencil in Black Magic
Mascara: Guerlain ‘Le 2 de Guerlain’ in No. 10 Noir
Lip pencil: MAC Lip Pencil in Stripdown
Lip gloss: Smashbox Lip Enhancing Gloss in Illume
Skin gloss: Vanitymark’s Shimmerskin Body Glisten Spray

I adore the eye concept and her brows are killing me softly with their SONG. What say you? Tell me in the comments!

Adoring: MAC's Adoring Carmine Holiday Collection

To me, MAC's Adoring Carmine collection is just so Dita Von Teese. P.S. MAC's ad on the left is actually for their Red She Said collection (or as Annie of Blogdorf Goodman calls it, their Right Said Fred collection - hilar). I just think it's GORGE and had to feature it.

There are two things to note here. First: Carmine, JIC you didn't know, is a deep red color. It's sometimes achieved by boiling dried insects in water to extract the carminic acid and then treating the clear solution with alum, cream of tartar, stannous chloride, or potassium hydrogen oxalate; the coloring and animal matters present in the liquid are thus precipitated. Cra, right? Makes it a pretty unlikely inspiration for a cosmetics collection. Second: My favorite television character, Amanda Sommers' (played by the talented and lovely Becki Newton) fave fall color is pale carmine.

I especially am enamored with the 3 Red Lips Set ($34.50) and the 4 Face Brushes Set ($49.50).

The 3 Red Lips Set includes a small drawstring purse of red-orange patent with wine satin gusset sides. Inside are two full-sized Lipsticks in glossy wine-red packaging: Adore It and Racy; and a mini Lipglass with a glossy wine-red cap in Frostlight. The lippies are just dying to accompany you to your hopefully-not-canceled holiday party. Limited edition, so get on it.

The 4 Face Brushes Set is a medium-sized round brush bag in wine-coloured satin with red-orange patent zipper enclosure and wristlet. Also includes a fabric brush holder with five professional metallic red handled brushes and a gloss black M∙A∙C logo: the 168 SE, 187 SE, 190 SE and the 194 SE. This brush set is PERF for travel. Limited edition as well.

Get both here.

Q & A with Twilight's Head Makeup Artist, Jeanne Van Phue!

MAC Cosmetics provided yours truly with this phenom Q&A with Jeanne Van Phue, Head Makeup Artist for Twilight, the movie based on the eponymous book, which is scheduled to open on Friday, November 21st. I already have plans to see the movie on that date and am about halfway through the book. It's very "in keeping" with my vampire obsession.

Q: What was the process for creating the various characters’ looks?
A: Katherine Hardwicke, the director, and I have previously worked together on a movie called “Lords of Dogtown,” so we know each other very well. I began by preparing sketches of my vision, keeping in mind the descriptions Stephanie Myers (Twilight’s Author) set forth in the books.

Bella’s (Kristen Stewart’s character) description in the novel is very pale and extremely beautiful with large chocolate brown eyes, so she wore colored lenses every day. I also pictured her as a natural beauty, which is exactly what Kristen is. I used a light hand while applying all neutral colors to make her look as though she had no makeup on.

Edward’s (Robert Pattinson’s character) description in the novel is impossibly handsome almost god-like. His skin is marble-pale, hard as stone and ice cold, but perfect and flawless. Edwards’ eyes are described as topaz colored when he is normal and black like onyx, when hungry.

Q: Were there any changes to the looks of the characters that weren’t planned?
A: At the beginning, Katherine Hardwicke visualized Edward with long hair, yet after studying his face and jaw line in the makeup test, the decision was made to go with short hair to accentuate his amazing jaw line.

Q: What was the overall look of the makeup in this movie?
A: All the vampires had to be pale, but I didn't want them to look to ghoulish, somewhere between Sweeney Todd and Interview with the Vampire. The choice was made for a denser, more opaque look for the supporting vampires and a lighter look for the leading man.

The challenge was they still had to look beautiful and handsome. The key was striking the delicate shading balance. We had two weeks of makeup test. This is the time for a makeup artist to unleash their imagination. During the testing Katherine let me know when I was on the mark. Katherine has a fabulous eye for detail and everything I did had to be approved by her.

Q: Were there any other challenges you encountered while working on location in Portland, Oregon?
A: The rain was a huge challenge. We were outside, and it rained the entire time we were there. Most of the shots were exterior; trying to fix makeup in the rain with wet faces and wet brushes was difficult. In the end, I must say I loved working on this movie, it challenged my creativity as never before. The cast was such a great group of talented young actors.

Q: What were your non-makeup related responsibilities in terms of creating this look?

A: Another one of my jobs was too find a contact lens specialist. So I called upon the expertise of Cristina Patterson Ceret FX lens/painter from Professional VisionCare.

Q: What M·A·C products did you use on the film Twilight?
A: The M.A.C products I used on this film were eye shadows and powder for our principles. We had several other characters and day players for whom I used M.A.C. foundations, lipsticks and blushes.

Q: How long have you used M·A·C products?

A: In 30 years as a makeup artist in my career and over 50 movies, M·A·C products have played an integral part in my work. I have probably used all of them at one time or another. I choose the cosmetics based on their skin tone and whether they are oily or dry. It also depends on how the product reacts to their particular skin type.

It is Easy Being Green.

I'm so 2004 about this, but since seeing Wicked this weekend, I'm on a mage Elphaba-green products kick. The play's story was so ridic clever, I'm seriously miffed I didn't think of it myself. Here are my fave verdant picks, the use of which will surely render you "popular," though the color didn't have the same results for our misunderstood gal, E.

Philosophy Spicy Pear Cobbler High Foaming Shampoo, Shower Gel and Bubble Bath ($16) This pearliciously-scented gel tempered with a warm spicy, baked-good essence generates a rich, foaming lather and gently cleanses for an sensory shower sensation.

LUSH Rub Rub Rub Shower Scrub ($9) Sea salt, lemon and mimosa are an unlikely combo to create a laundry scent, but somehow, that is exactly what this stuff emits.
After scrubbing, the formula dissolves in water, leaving your shower drain free of rogue bits and pieces.

Tracy Stern Lip Balm Tea: The Romantic (picured, right - $22 for a set of four)
This all-natural lip treatment hydrates like whoa with the sophisticated flavor of Tracy Stern SALONTEA’S Original and Beauty Collection.
The kit contains: The Society Hostess, vanilla black tea; The Romantic, green tea with jasmine flowers; The Writer, chai tea, cinnamon and cardamon; The Fashionable Dandy, black tea and rare bergamot oil.

MAC Pearlglide Eyeliner in Bankroll ($14.50) This creamy kohl eye liner yields a sparkly, reflective finish with fantastic color pay-off with phenomenal glide. A gem of MAC's new Suite Array collection.

Steroids in the Slut Olympics: Faux Lashes

So everyone knows that for gals, Halloween is a glorified excuse to rock your most scandalous clothing. I myself am planning a smoldering slutty Betty Draper ensemble. It's going to be to DIE. Since we've all come to terms with the fact that All Hallow's Eve is simply the Slut Olympics, I need to educate you on your faux lash options (a.k.a. steroids for the slut olympics.) The fun part? They'll never disqualify you from making it to the championship round.

Laura Mercier Corner Faux Lashes ($18) These add a hint of volume, a ridic amount of length, and tons of sex appeal.

Shu Uemura False Eyelashes in Luxe ($20) When it comes to lashes... Shu knows best.

Revlon Lash Flares are self-adhesive (no glue! YAY!) and can be applied only to the very corners for a more natural look. Good for faux lash virgins. P.S. There's no virtue in that, so dive in and get it over with.

MAC 37 Lashes ($20) Twiggy.com. You're logging on.

What are you dressing as for Halloween? Start at the beginning, end at the end. Go.

Grey's My Favorite Color... I Felt So Symbolic Yesterday

Adam Duritz and I both adore grey.

The newest addition to my whore drawer at work are grey eye makeup items that produce a non-strumpety smoky eye in a flash for post-work drinks. A round-up of my fave products of late:

CARGO Plantlove Eye Shadow in Finch ($20) is a mauve taupe shimmer that looks grey on lids. It's made with only natural and organic ingredients and is free of parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, and synthetic dyes and fragrances. Its high pigmentation yields incred stay-true color.

Stila Smudge Pot in Gray ($18) goes on smoothly and will take you from day to night in a flash. I like to use a shadow brush and blend it all the way to the crease for (Johnny) drama.

DuWop EyeCatcher Pencil ($18.50) in black is TECHNICALLY a black pencil, but it's sort of a flat, lighter black. I apply a line close to the lashes (obv) with a light hand and it looks more deep grey than noir. I like that the chubby pencil is easy to handle.

Tell me in the comments: what's in your whore drawer?

Fashion Week: BBJ Backstage at Diesel Black Gold

I finally met the famed Charlotte Tilbury (she was the lead artist backstage at the Barbie show) backstage at Diesel Black Gold today. She worked with MAC makeup to create the look you see at left. The inspiration was the 1930s Great Depression era infused with a modern rock and roll vibe. Charlotte herself, BTW, looks like a rock star.

"It's about a girl who stayed up all night with a jazz band," Charlotte explained. A girl who's partying through the depression, evidently. How to convey this bender of a night?

Charlotte lined eyes with MAC Eye Liner in Smolder on the top, bottom and waterline. Then, she topped it with MAC Blackware Gloss for a wet, messier look. Lots of MAC Mascara in Black was brushed onto lashes, while brows were set with MAC Clear Brow Set. MAC Face and Body Foundation was used to even out the models' skin tone and was set with MAC Prep + Prime Finishing Powder. Lips were "intended to look worn off, as if she's been kissing," Charlotte said. She used a combination of MAC Brick Lip Pencil, MAC Lipstick in Black Knight and MAC Lipstick in Ruby Woo.

Eugene Souleiman created a "Toulouse Letrec/Fall of the Empire" look using WELLA products. "It's based on the fall of someone glamorous," he explained when I asked as to the inspiration behind the look. "It's abstract in shape, but it moves," Eugene said. He used hairspray as a settling lotion by spraying it on before curling sections of hair with an iron. Then, the curl was sort of undone for a frizzified wave. A fishnet veil finished the look.

This is an intricate 'do.

Check the close-up of the back part of hair, which Eugene coiled into a lazy bun.

Amanda Fontanarrosa for CND told me that the brand custom blended a cream browned down purple for the Diesel Black Gold. Isn't it just like them to create a color I'm in love with that will never see the light of day on MY nails? "It's ace," Amanda confirmed. I agree.

Fashion Week: BBJ Backstage at Miss Sixty

I ALWAYS cover Miss Sixty. I'm like Rain Man about it. This year's backstage beauty inspiration didn't disappoint.

NO FRIZZ
technology made its fashion week debut backstage at Miss Sixty this season. Celebrity stylist Ward Stegerhoek headed up the Living Proof team to design the look – Rocker Chic. "It's a softer, girly version of Rock and Roll," Ward explained.

I loved the knot he created in the front of the hair. It feminized the vibe perfectly. Ward used the NO FRIZZ Wave-Shaping, Curl-Defining Styling Spray to style the hair and then used the NO FRIZZ Wave-Shaping, Curl-Defining Styling Cream to twist the hair and make it appear rough and stringy. NO FRIZZ Wave-Shaping, Curl-Defining Styling Spray was used to hold the curl in place. NO FRIZZ Wave-Shaping, Curl-Defining Styling Cream was also used.

Lisa Butler for MAC drew mainly from a purple palette. She started with a black pencil liner (MAC Grease Paint Stick - it's movable and then sets) on the top and bottom lid and dotted it between the lashes for depth before pressing on MAC Eye Shadow in Violet Trance, an electric blue/purple, on top of the pencil. Violet Pigment was dusted underneath the eyes. MAC Eye Shadow in Young Pink was also brushed onto the lids, which provided a soft black effect "for structure on the socket," Lisa said. She then feathered out the shadow to soften the look. Skin and lips were left as-is. Brows were groomed, but were neutral.

Check my Fall 2008 coverage of Miss Sixty here and Spring 2009 coverage here.

Fashion Week: BBJ Backstage at Tuleh

Based on the collection's violet shades, makeup artist Polly Osmond for MAC created a look inspired by Paris in the 1930s.

MAC Studio Sculpt SPF 15 Foundation
was used to define skin, with a bit of powder to mattify. Polly instituted a smoky eye with a grey finish to define models' peepers. Lips were dark and dramatic. To achieve the look, Polly used a sheer black MAC Lipstick called Dark Night sparingly and dabbed it on like a stain using her fingers. She mixed this with MAC Lipstick in Dark Side, a burgundy hue. Lashes were curled and saturated with mascara. MAC Eye Shadow in Copper Plate was applied to the lids. Brows were elongated for a finished effect.

Stylist Yannick D'Is headed up the Barex hair team. The inspiration? 1940s fingerwaves. "It's very Hitchcock heroine," Yannick said. Backstage at the hair station, I spotted a print-out photo of Tippi Hendren (pictured, left). It seems she was THE Hitchcock heroin Yannick had in mind.

To achieve a look a la Tippi, he used a curling iron on sections of hair, which he then pincurled. After the curls set, he brushed through and separated the hair into a low side part. Then, Yannick plaited a braid horizontally along the nape of the neck to anchor the waves, which he folded under and pinned along the length of it to give the illusion of shorter, bobbed hair. Barex Gloss Hairspray was used to maintain the 'do.

Fashion Week: BBJ Backstage at Thuy

Romero Jennings for MAC created a looked based on "optimism and the future" using clean lines and an organic black and white motif. He incorporated both shine and matte textures when employing his arsenal of products.

MAC Fluidline
gel liner was used in addition to MAC Lipstick in Fleshpot. The shade Chelsea was used for darker-skinned gals. My favorite aspect of this look was the geometric, squared-off, futuristic cat eye. Romero mixed white and gold shimmer shadow which he swept onto lids.

Anthony Barrow for Avon created the hair concept for Thuy. "Controlled chaos" was the inspiration. "It's a bit rockerish," Anthony said.

This airy, dry texture was created with the help of Avon Advance Techniques Volumizing Mousse and Hairspray. Anthony separated a section in the front from the ears up and backcombed it.

Then, he twisted the back into a sort of asymmetrical French twist, brought the front side over and left the ends out for "grittiness." "It's not too girly but edgy," Anthony said. "Raw, but clean."

Definitely one of the more creative updos I've seen this week!
