Fashion Week: BBJ Backstage at Carlos Miele

The makeup at Carlos Miele was inspired by an '80s silhouette using non-'80s colors--mostly charcoal greys, taupes, and pinky gold highlights. Romy Soleimani for MAC gave me the deets on the look.

"We highlighted above and around the browbone in a "V," she explained. "This creates a dramatic profile." She was given a lot of creative license with this one. Carlos showed her the collection (see pieces all the way below) and told her to take the reins!

Romy dabbed a MAC Blushcreme in Brit Wit, a dirty plum creme blush, onto the lips and covered them with a slick of MAC Cremesheen Glass in Boy Bait, a light neutral beige with pearl. She managed to pick the most entertainingly named MAC products I've heard in a while.

Fabulous Ted Giza for John Barrett created a "slightly haphazard ballerina bun." "Like a Type B Ballerina?" I asked. "EXACTLY," Ted laughed. The products used were John Barrett's Be In Control, Be Heeled Styling Masque, and Styling Balm. The look echoed the structured, yet flowy feminine fabrics in chiffon, silk and satin of the designs themselves. The hair was modern, but not too complicated. Ted pulled the models' hair into ponytails, which he then ratted up for volume with an unfussy, unfinished texture. Post-ratting, he fingered through the sections of the pony and then twisted and pinned in a slightly slapdash fashion. "Not TOO slapdash, though," Ted said. "That would be too... cleaning lady."

Fashion Week: BBJ Backstage at Adam

The finished look at Adam!

The fantastic Romy Soleimani worked with Fashion Week staple, MAC cosmetics to create the look for Adam at the tents today. The inspiration: A decidedly Japanese take on watercolors. "We used lots of pearls in layers," explained Romy. "Lots of fuschia, teal, and violet brushed on the top of the lid in candyish hues." Says Romy, "It's very upbeat. It's a time for creativity, in light of the current financial climate." Just as with watercolor paintings, there were no strong lines. How can this be translated into a look you can wear for REALS in Fall 2009? Romy recommends using just one color element-- and going pearl as opposed to matte, for softness.

Here are the products Romy used. Keep an eye out for them come Fall 2009!
Love Rock Blush, a candyish pink (check out the second photo from the top for a close-up of this GORGE blush)
Eye Shadow in Beautiful Wish (violet) swept lightly on the lid
Cornflower Blue Pigment "sheered on" for depth
Teal Pigment on the lower lid
Pencil in Tealo on the lower lashline
Lip Erase on lips, which does just what it sounds like it should: it produces a nude, neutralized pout.

Next, I headed on over to chat up Laurent Philipon who worked with Bumble and bumble
products to edumacate myself on the hair situation. The first thing I noticed? It's utterly wearable. "There was no historical inspiration," Laurent said. He at first planned to go for a retro '40s look before deciding on low key "natural hair" with a light wave at the ends. He went with a center part, though without a "harsh line," much in the spirit of the makeup. The hair was down, with a small amount of volume at the crown. "Not a '60s kind of volume," Laurent assured me. He simply backcombed a bit and sprayed with Bumble and bumble Does It All Hairspray for root lift. Laurent prepped hair initially with Bb Styling Lotion, which he says he uses in the same manner a makeup artist uses moisturizer. "It's right for all types of hair," he said in his French accent, which makes everything sound just that much more sophist. A curling iron was used to create the waves, after which, he finger combed them through to tousle them a bit. Right before the girls stepped onto the runway, Laurent smoothed a bit of Styling Wax onto their locks for a bit of separation.

Et voila!

M·A·C Cosmetics Sponsors Logo’s RuPaul’s Drag Race

Have I mentioned that I ADORE RuPaul? ADORE him. I think he's beyond the beyond. In fact, my coworker B calls me Ru (as in RuPaul and rude) when I'm being rude. I, in turn, call her Rue (as in MacClanahan... and RUDE).

Anywho, here's the RuPaul news! M·A·C Cosmetics is sponsoring RuPaul’s Drag Race, a new show from Logo that seeks to find America’s Next Drag Queen Superstar. Hosted by RuPaul, the first spokesperson ever for M·A·C Viva Glam, nine drag performers will compete in weekly challenges that will test their skills as a fashion designer, hair stylist, performer, spokesperson, and makeup artist.

In order to create their drag illusions, these performers spend years training in front of a mirror. It can sometimes take up to six hours for a drag queen to get ready. It's an investment, dolls. Each week the contestants undergo a transformation, using their skills with a brush, a lot of color and concealer to make magic happen. One week, they will even do makeovers on real women, bringing some of the tricks they’ve learned through years of practice to everyday ladies.

The M·A·C Viva Glam Challenge Episode will premiere on Monday, February 23rd at 10:00pm ET/PT on LOGO and online at www.rupaulsdragrace.com. “RuPaul’s Drag Race” premiered Monday, February 2 at 10:00 PM ET/PT.
