Bumble and bumble Partners with Broadway's HAIR

Rock musical HAIR will open on Broadway tomorrow evening and Bumble and bumble partnered with the sold-out production by the Public Theater last summer, and will continue its support for the Broadway run. Bumble and bumble editorial hairstylist Rolando Beauchamp, who has worked with Mary Kate Olsen, Kristen Davis and Christina Applegate, provides some styling tips for anyone who wants to get this loose, natural flower child look that’s great for spring:

For wavy or curly hair:

The key is keeping the hair’s natural texture, just helping it out with some product that gives it some support. Spritz Bb Surf Spray ($22) onto damp hair, and work about a quarter size amount of Bb Styling Creme ($23) into hair, mid-shaft to ends. The combination of Surf Spray and Styling Creme gives the right texture – a bit dry, not greasy. Dry with a diffuser or let air dry if it is warm out. The key is not to brush or comb out, just finger style and let it be free!

For straight hair:

Begin just like curly/wavy technique with Bb. Surf Spray and Styling Creme, but you’ll need at waves to the hair. Using a 1 inch barrel curling iron, take 1 inch diameter sections of hair and roughly wrap the hair around the iron. The goal is to create bends and waves in the hair, not perfect curls. Then scrunch the section up and pin to the head. Continue curling sections, wrapping the hair in alternating directions, then scrunching and pinning the sections until the entire head is pinned up. Let the hair set for a few minutes, then undo sections. Don’t brush the sections out, just finger style.

Fashion Week: BBJ Backstage at Herve Leger

Lead artist Diane Kendal for NARS created the "strong brow, dewy skin" look at Herve Leger today. Despite the fierceness of the hair, makeup and clothes, three models tripped on the unbelievably high heels. I wound up scoring a ticket through my gal Julia, PR Director of NARS and caught the "front of house" show, as they say in the biz. BTW, everyone clapped for the girls when they got back in the game. I thought it was a lovely show of support. Anywho. Let's get back to the makeup.

The inspiration: For Fall 2009, Hervé Léger drums to the beat of an urban tribe with a gradient palette of earth tones polished by rich shades of deep ebony. Diane drew inspiration from Helmut Newton photographs, using the concept of a brave warrior - strong and fierce. “The collection is very hard and sculpted so we wanted to keep the skin neutral and show strength through the eyebrows,” said Diane. Here's how to recreate the look:

Face

· Use NARSskin Hydrating Moisture Cream to moisturize
· Apply NARS Concealer as needed, to cover any imperfections
· Use a minimal amount of NARS Sheer Glow Foundation (NEW for Fall 2009) to even skin tone

Eyes
· Brush brows to define natural shape
· With NARS Single Eyeshadow in Bali, fill in brows
· Brush again for even, natural look
· Apply gentle dusting of NARS Single Eyeshadow in Sophia to entire lid, blending up towards brows for natural shading
· Curl lashes with NARS Eyelash Curler

Lips
· Apply NARS Lip Therapy Treatment in Rain to entire lip
· Use NARS Concealer over Rain to mute color

Hair stylist Dennis Lanni for Bumble and bumble created the hair concept for the show. Said Dennis, "I incorporated two different textures for a wet/dry look." He used a matte rubber hair band which was "supposed to look like electrical tape," Dennis explained. The graphic look featured an explosive ponytail (are you noticing that ponies are HUGE for Fall 2009? Get your rubber bands ready!). The sides are slick, but the top is dry, earthy, and slept in. To achieve the crimpy, wild ponytail body, Dennis employed... pipe cleaners. Is that creative, or what? He folded a cleaner in half and weaved through small pieces of hair in a figure eight, then set the hair quickly between a flatiron "to bake it." Dennis mentioned that pipe cleaners are so easy to use because you can simply secure the ends with it as well. "There's no need for pins," he said. Dennis used "a lot of products with alcohol": Bumble and bumble Holding Spray, Holding Gel, and my favorite hairspray of all time, Spray de Mode. Sounds like someone needs a big cocktail, post-show!

Fashion Week: BBJ Backstage at Adam

The fantastic Romy Soleimani worked with Fashion Week staple, MAC cosmetics to create the look for Adam at the tents today. The inspiration: A decidedly Japanese take on watercolors. "We used lots of pearls in layers," explained Romy. "Lots of fuschia, teal, and violet brushed on the top of the lid in candyish hues." Says Romy, "It's very upbeat. It's a time for creativity, in light of the current financial climate." Just as with watercolor paintings, there were no strong lines. How can this be translated into a look you can wear for REALS in Fall 2009? Romy recommends using just one color element-- and going pearl as opposed to matte, for softness.

Next, I headed on over to chat up Laurent Philipon who worked with Bumble and bumble

products to edumacate myself on the hair situation. The first thing I noticed? It's utterly wearable. "There was no historical inspiration," Laurent said. He at first planned to go for a retro '40s look before deciding on low key "natural hair" with a light wave at the ends. He went with a center part, though without a "harsh line," much in the spirit of the makeup. The hair was down, with a small amount of volume at the crown. "Not a '60s kind of volume," Laurent assured me. He simply backcombed a bit and sprayed with Bumble and bumble Does It All Hairspray for root lift. Laurent prepped hair initially with Bb Styling Lotion, which he says he uses in the same manner a makeup artist uses moisturizer. "It's right for all types of hair," he said in his French accent, which makes everything sound just that much more sophist. A curling iron was used to create the waves, after which, he finger combed them through to tousle them a bit. Right before the girls stepped onto the runway, Laurent smoothed a bit of Styling Wax onto their locks for a bit of separation.
